THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Highlighting the need for energy conservation and devising alternatives which can minimise overdependence on conventional energy sources, students from various schools across the state participated in a painting competition organised by Ministry of Power at Kanakakkunnu Palace on Sunday.Fifty primary school students who were selected by the organisers after initial screening imparted deft strokes exhibiting their skill and social commitment.  The theme of the competition was energy conservation for the future generation. Donned in yellow full-sleeved T-shirts and caps bearing the caption ‘save energy’, the children amazed the spectators with their luminous creativity which was channelised for addressing a burning issue like power crisis. Most of the children were participating in such a programme for the first time and exhibited tentativeness in the initial moments. Shayak Ghosh from Kendriya Vidyalaya Kottayam painted the earth which had become greener after inculcation of alternative energy-harnessing mechanism. Most of the children, using their miniature canvasses effectively, created paintings that illuminated the cause of energy crisis, while others pointed at the remedial measures  that can be effectively implemented.Amaljith, a sixth standard student of Charummoodu St Joseph’s Convent English Medium School, using his crayons, etched an image of a rural village where the domestic electrical utensils were replaced by manual labour. The drawing had all the charm and had a piece of advice that if daily chores were performed manually, then power loss could be reduced drastically.   The officials of Human Resource Department of NTPC Kayamkulam, the nodal agents of the event, said that the programme was launched to create awareness about energy conservation among children.”With this programme, we have succeeded in educating both the parents and children about alternative energy harnessing mechanisms and the need for conserving energy for the future generations,” he said. The first three winners of the event would take part in the national-level competition which is slated to be held in New Delhi on December 12.
