On August 3, Usman, along with his accomplice Momin, attacked a Border Security Force convoy killing two personnel and injuring eight others in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur. While Momin was killed in the gunbattle, Usman fled into the forests after taking three hostages. He was soon surrounded by a team of BSF and Army soldiers and a brief gunbattle followed. He was overpowered by his hostages and captured.
