New Delhi: Attempts to restore peace in the violence-hit Jamia Milia Islamia University proved to be futile as students went on a hunger strike demanding arrest of the Proctor for allegedly instigating trouble at the varsity.
Six students of the varsity began a 24-hour hunger strike demanding arrest of Rocket Ibrahim, the proctor of University, who they claimed had pointed a gun at students on Tuesday.
The varsity campus witnessed large scale violence on Tuesday evening after outgoing Chairman of the Students' Union Shams Pervez tried to meet Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan in connection with admission of some people who the varsity authorities claim were "known trouble makers."
Several varsity offices and government and private cars were damaged as the group of people went on a rampage on the campus after being denied admission.
The tense atmosphere in the campus prompted the authorities to shut the varsity indefinitely and order immediate vacation of the hostels.
Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan had ordered an inquiry into the violence by retired High Court judge S K Agarwal. The students can take their grievances to Agarwal, he said.
The students appeared unimpressed by the inquiry with Pervez dismissing the move as "an attempt to hide the truth."
"The committee has been appointed by the Vice Chancellor on his own," he said adding the students do not "expect a fair hearing. We do not trust the Vice Chancellor."
Jamia authorities said it was "unfortunate that students do not have faith in the inquiry committee."
