KOCHI: Now the people of east Edappally can easily cross the NH bypass to west Edappally thanks to the pedestrian signal installed at a major crossing hub.Ever since the NH bypass bifurcated Edappally, the people of east Edappally, a major residential area, have to cross to the west for availing themselves of major services. Most of the schools, hospitals, banks, offices and other service centres are located in the west and crossing the NH bypass from Edappally Marottichode to Edappally Market Road was a major hassle for the pedestrians despite the presence of zebra crossing.Road mishaps have been frequent on this spot. To make things easier, the Thrikkakara, Edappally, Marottichode, Thoppil(TEMT) Development Forum has installed the pedestrian signal on either side of the road at the major crossing hub a fortnight ago.“We have installed the signal on the NH bypass where people from the east can cross to the west. We have also beautified the area and fixed hand railings for the steps, with private participation,” said Forum president Jaleel Thaanath.People who want to cross the road can press the green button on the black box to alert the traffic flow on the road to stop. But, the major flaw is that both the public and motorists are not aware of the new system.“We have put up a notice near the signal but only a few have taken note of it. Even motorists need to be made aware of it. If the Corporation help in placing a sign board, it would be more visible. Roping in student police can create awareness on the pedestrian crossing,” said N M Raghunathan, forum secretary.
