RAMANATHAPURAM: Four Rameswaram fishermen had a miraculous escape when a petrol bomb was hurled on their boat by their Lankan counterparts in mid sea on Wednesday.Sources said that around 603 mechanised boats had ventured into the sea for fishing from Rameswaram. However, the fishermen set out to sea allegedly with the fear that they might be attacked by Lankans as the Indian cricket team defeated the island nation in a cricket match that was held in Bangladesh on Tuesday.Meanwhile, some boats cast their nets near Katchativu. At this juncture, four Lankan Tamil fishermen came in a boat to that area. In split seconds, one of the Lankan Tamil fishermen lit a petrol bomb and hurled it on the mechanized boat in mid sea and fled the spot. The bomb exploded and the bottom of the boat was badly damaged and water started entering inside.As their boat started to sink, the four fishermen, Arumugam, Tamilselvan, Ramakrishnan and Vincent of Rameswaram, cried for help.Three other fishermen rushed to the spot and rescued them. Fortunately, the four escaped unhurt.Later, the four fishermen reached Rameswaram and Arumugam lodged a complaint with the Fisheries Department on Thursday.Arumugam, a fisherman and the boat owner, told Express that the four Lankan fishermen came in a boat and had hurled the petrol bomb. The plank of the boat got damaged and as a result sea water started entering the boat.It is said that the cost of the boat was `12 lakh and was launched for fishing only a few months ago. A source from the Fisheries Department said that the boat owner had lodged a complaint that had been sent to the higher authorities.
