CHENNAI: In an attempt to save her 62-year-old mother, who was sentenced to death in Malaysia on charges of drug trafficking, a 40-year-old woman from Mangadu along with her family filed a petition with the Chief Minister’s grievance cell and the city police commissioner on Monday.Noorjehan of Bazaar Street, Pattur Mangadu, said her mother Fazila Bi (62) was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur airport in February, 2009 after she was caught possessing 2,925 grams of ketamine. She further claimed that her mother was sent to Malaysia to work as a housemaid for a monthly pay of `10,000 by a travel agent based in Triplicane, as Fazila Bi wanted to get her fourth and youngest daughter Thameem Banu married. The woman had paid `35,000 to the travel agent after reportedly selling all their belongings. “She earlier worked in Dubai and got the other three children, including me, married. She could not afford to get us gold jewellery for our marriage, but wanted to buy some at least for our youngest sister,” said Noorjehan, eldest daughter of Fazila Bi.Mother of four, Fazila Bi lost her husband a few years ago. Her sons-in-law make a living by selling vegetables and rolling beedis. On February 13, 2009, when Fazila Bi was on her way to Malaysia, an employee of the travel agency reportedly gave her a suitcase at the airport asking her to hand it over to one Raj once she reached Malaysia. “My mother was suspicious as she knew drug trafficking happens. But the man gave her a key and told her that they were household items and there was nothing to worry. My mother never opened the box and reluctantly took it as she feared losing her job,” Noorjehan told Express. Once Fazila landed in Malaysia, she was arrested. Her family got to know about the arrest four days later from the local travel agent. Fazila’s third daughter Faridha (35) reportedly died of depression on hearing the news.
