PM Narendra Modi Announces Rs 2 Lakh Compensation to Amarnath Bus Accident Victims
Sixteen Amarnath pilgrims were killed and around 27 injured, 19 of them critically, when their bus skidded off the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and fell into a deep nullah in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

New Delhi: The next kin of Amarnath pilgrims killed in a bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir will receive a compensation of Rs 2 lakh and those seriously injured will get Rs 50,0000, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday.

"PM announced ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs for next of kin of those killed & Rs. 50,000 for those seriously injured, in the bus accident in J&K (sic)," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted.

Sixteen Amarnath pilgrims were killed and around 27 injured, 19 of them critically, when their bus skidded off the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and fell into a deep nullah in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. Earlier, Modi expressed pain at the loss of lives.

"Extremely pained by the loss of lives of Amarnath Yatris due to a bus accident in J&K. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased," Modi tweeted. "I pray that those injured in the bus accident in J&K recover soon," the Prime Minister added.

Home minister Rajnath Singh also tweeted his condolences and said his prayers are with those who lost their loved ones and with the injured. “I spoke to J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Muftiji regarding the unfortunate accident of the bus carrying Amarnath Yatris near Ramban. Mehboobaji has apprised me of the ongoing rescue operations. The injured Amarnath Yatris are being airlifted for treatment in Jammu,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) ordered an in-house inquiry into the road accident.

"An in-house inquiry committee has been constituted to look into the circumstances that led to this tragic accident involving an SRTC bus carrying the Amarnath yatris," its Managing Director Mir Afroz Ahmad said in Srinagar.

He said the committee has been asked to submit its report within two days.
