New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said killing people in the name of protecting cows is not acceptable. But will the cow vigilantes listen to him? This is the big question. Unfortunately, only time will tell. However, here is what the PM has said in the past on violence and the reaction.

August 15, 2014

WHhat PM said: In his first Independence Day speech, Modi termed communal and caste tensions as evil sins and called for a 10-year moratorium on caste and communal violence.

What actually happened: The PM’s call was ignored and issues such as ghar wapsi, love jihad, and attacks on Muslim continued.

October 9, 2015

What the PM said: Breaking his silence on the Dadri incident, he exhorted Hindus and Muslims to fight poverty together, rather than fighting one another.

What actually happened: Cow protection by vigilantes assumed dangerous dimensions.

August 6, 2016

What PM said: Using his first-ever town hall to deliver a lacerating statement on gau rakshaks, Modi hit out at cow vigilantes, said 'gau rakshak business makes me angry'.

What actually happened: Gau rakshaks hit out at the PM, Hindu Mahasabha mulled legal action and said that "Narendra Modi is not worthy of being Prime Minster, he will return just like Vajpayee had to in 2004.”

August 7, 2016

What PM said: Attacking those behind atrocities on Dalits, he said, "If you want to attack, attack me, not Dalits. If you want to shoot, shoot me"

What actually happened: The VHP’s Gujarat unit issued a scathing statement saying: "You (Modi) said that 80% of gau rakshaks are fake, then why did you not initiate any legal action against them and proved them goons during your tenure as the Gujarat chief minister for more than 10 years?"
