The special team investigating the illegal quarrying cases has stopped the export operation of more than 10 granite quarries which are facing the mining cases here.
Police also seized 80 granite blocks kept for exporting at the Tuticorin port.
The licences for the exports were also suspended by the Customs Department on the request of the police. PRP Granites, Kumar Granites, Madura Granites, Surya Granites, GG, Sindhu and Olympus were on the suspension list, an official said.
“We have got the details of the granite exports by various private firms. The list has been sent to the Commercial Tax and the Central Excise departments to check the returns statement of the granite firms. If violations are found in the tax assessment, we will take action against them,” a senior officer said. In the meantime, the police have taken measures to recover the granite blocks from the Tuticorin port and sent them to Madurai Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN) quarry.
Police are also getting petitions from landlords, victims and government officials against the granite quarry companies. Until Thursday, 70 petitions have been received from the public against the granite company owners. As many as 25 petitions were received separately from the police personnel who were cheated by the granite owners by purchasing their lands at a cheap rates.
