New Delhi: It's certainly one of the most serious and gruesome ceasfire violations in recent times. Pakistani troops on Tuesday crossed into the Indian territory and ambushed an Army patrol party in the Mendhar sector of Poonch, killing two Indian soldiers and badly mutilating the body of one of them.
It's the second ceasfire violation in about 48 hours. Earlier on Sunday, in the Haji Pir sector of Uri, the two sides exchanged fire. One Pakistan soldier had died in the firing. Islamabad had lodged a strong protest then.
This time the Northern Command has called it a grave provocation from the Pakistani side. The attack took place along the Line of Control when Pakistanis came about 400 metres into Indian territory and assaulted the patrol party.
Reports suggest it was the Border Action Team of the Pakistan Army that carried out the attack in inclement weather, with firing being exchanged for almost half an hour.
Pakistan has denied the allegations, and experts believe this violation, coming in the backdrop of almost a dozen violations in the last month and an ongoing political dialogue presses the need for an apt response.
The DGs of Military Operations of the two sides are in touch and any Indian response will only be taken after that.
