The sacred portals of Badrinath shrine will be thrown open for devotees in the wee hours on May 5, after a five-month winter break. The doors of the Himalayan shrine will be opened at 4.5 AM on May 5, Badri-Kedar Temple Committee CEO Ganesh Godiyal on Tuesday said.

The auspicious day and hour to reopen the gates of the shrine was announced on Tuesday by Pandit Acharya Krishna Prasad Uniyal on the occasion of Basant Panchmi at the erstwhile palace of the Tehri royals located at Narendranagar, he said. The announcement was made in the presence of Badri-Kedar temple Committee officials, royal family scion and local BJP MP Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah and others, Godiyal said.

The portals of the famous shrine were closed on November 18 last year amid elaborate rituals after resumption of the yatra to the temple after over a three-month suspension in the wake of the natural calamity that hit Uttarakhand in June last year.

Located along the banks of the Alaknanda river at a height of over 10,000 ft, the Badrinath temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is closed every year during winter when it becomes snowbound and inaccessible.
