Two professors of Sri Venkateswara University were arrested by police here on Friday on the charge of indecent behaviour and sexual harassment of two women research scholars.
The accused, Prof M Rajeshwara Rao and his wife Prof K Vijaya Kumari are faculty member of the Department of Zoology at the university and Prof Vijaya is the guide for the two research scholars. Last year, the two scholars had complained to their guide against the behaviour of her husband, but in vain. When they complained to her the second time, Vijaya Kumari reportedly rebuked them saying they did not arrange vehicles for her private tours.
When their professor failed to protect them, the two scholars, in February 2011, complained to the then vice-chancellor Prof Prabhakara Rao and also took the matter to the media. Following public outcry, the vice-chancellor appointed a fact-finding committee comprising three members. The committee, after interacting with several students, and teaching and non-teaching staff found fault with the behaviour of Prof Rajeshwara Rao.
The executive council of the university accepted the findings of the committee as it did not find the explanation of Prof Rajeshwara Rao satisfactory.
