MADURAI: Theni district collector K S Palanisamy and Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Rajesh Das held talks for four hours, to defuse tension at TN-Kerala border after protesters gathered in huge numbers to to cross Kerala border condemning the Kerala Government stand on Mullaiperiyar dam issue, on Saturday.“Tamil Nadu government will address your concerns. You should maintain peace,” said Collector K S Palanisamy, who was found standing on the Government jeep along with IG Rajesh Das addressing thousands of protesters near Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation depot, located few hundred metres away from the Kumily checkpost.Though the protestors initially refused to vacate the place. Collector Palanisamy and IG Rajesh Das along with senior police officials walked along with the public for few kilometers down to Lower camp.Outraged by the Kerala Assembly resolution passed on Friday for building a new dam at Mullaiperiyar and lowering of water level to 120 feet, people from Tamil Nadu border areas including Suruli Theertham, Cumbum, Gudalur took a procession towards Kumily checkpost demanding the closure of major roads from TN leading to Kerala, and to increase the water level at dam to 152 feet. Also, six protestors from Tamil Nadu who crossed over to Kerala were allegedly beaten up on Saturday. It is alleged that Kerala police also beat them up and detained four of them, while two of them manage to return to Tamil Nadu border.
