PUDUCHERRY: Students housed in the Pondicherry University hostel staged at demonstration in their mess here on Sunday to protest the poor quality of food provided to them. The protestors gheraoed their chief warden and demanded the intervention of Vice Chancellor Prof J A K Tareen to sort out the issue.A few of the students told Express that the food provided to the hostellers was of “very poor quality.” The centralised mess, Amudha, which is under contract to a private caterer at present, caters to nearly 2,500 outstation inmates, mostly male students.A protesting student complained that they have often “found worms in the rice, which is the cheapest variety available in the market” and that “the chicken used for the curry is rotten, with a foul smell emanating from it.” Though they took up the issue with the university authorities including the V-C, it was of no avail, the students claimed. The university, a student claimed, would simply give assurances. “Now, we are not ready to hear the false assurances,” he said. The agitators also occupied the main gate of the university.
