PURI: After several years of delay, the district administration has finally recruited youths from the Pentkota fishing community to serve as life guards. Earlier, the State Human Rights Commission had instructed the government to facilitate safety of tourists in the wake of several revellers drowning in the sea.Christened ‘sea riders’, the group would ensure safety of tourists while in the sea. SP Amitendranath Sinha inaugurated a training camp for the sea riders, organised by an NGO Barefoot, on Friday. On the occasion, Sinha said life guards with exceptional performance on duty would be rewarded. Assistant Director of State Tourism Department RK Mishra expressed concern over the surge in crime against tourists in Puri, Chilika and Konark. Beach Protection Council president Jagannath Bastia, Life Guard Association president Dinabandhu Rao, Barefoot president Natabar Sahu and Barefoot secretary Yugabrat Kar were present.
