Kerala's commercial capital Kochi was badly hit on Monday with private bus operators going on an indefinite stir from Sunday midnight protesting the decision making it mandatory for buses to fix speed governors following the Malappuram mishap which claimed 13 lives.

Some 1,500 private buses kept off the roads and office-goers had a harrowing time in the peak morning hours to get to offices on time. KSRTC buses operated their services providing some relief.

Reports said the strike was total in the central districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam, Allapuzha and Idukki as a lot of commuters depend on private buses.

Government had cancelled the permits of various buses which had not fixed the speed governors following a spate of road accidents, including the Malappuram mishap on Friday last.
