New Delhi: An earthquake of moderate intensity struck in the vicinity of Andaman and Nicobar islands on Saturday.
The quake, with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter Scale, hit South Andaman region at 01:21 hours, said the India Meteorological Department. No damage or casualties were reported.
The epicentre of the quake was located near Hut Bay, 116 km south of Port Blair.
The quake revived the fears of the 2004 tsunami that hit the region and some residents fled their homes on Saturday.
The Andaman and Nicobar group of islands were devastated by the December 2004 tsunami, which was triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake near Indonesia, and killed over 2,000 people. More than 9,700 families are still living in the region without permanent shelter.
