New Delhi: After a series of consultations with Congress leaders on general issues confronting the party, Rahul Gandhi on Monday began his statewise interaction with AICC in-charges, PCC chiefs and CLP leaders to discuss specific problems plaguing the state units of the party. In his meetings with the state leaders from Delhi and Chhattisgarh, he is learnt to have impressed upon them the need to tone up the organisation and put up a united face.
During his earlier meeting with PCC chiefs and CLP leaders of other states in February 2013, Rahul had promised to meet them separately on specific issues as complaints of lack of coordination had emerged from various states. There were also complaints that in states, where Congress is in power, the chief ministers tend to ignore the PCCs. Major states going to polls in 2013 are Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Congress is hoping for a comeback in Karnataka, where it romped home in urban civic bodies polls on Sunday.
Congress is in power in Rajasthan and Delhi while BJP rules Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In most of these states, internal dissension has been a key challenge for the party, which also came to fore during Gandhi's earlier interactions. Congress President Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel and AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi were also present in the meetings on Monday, which deliberated at length over the challenges before the party in the two states, which go to election in 2012.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, PCC chief JP Agrawal and AICC in-charge for the state Chaudhary Birender Singh discussed the organisation issues concerning the state. Those who took in the meeting over Chhattisgarh included AICC general secretary in-charge for the state BK Hariprasad, PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel and CLP leader Ravindra Chaubey besides Rajasthan MP and AICC secretary in-charge for the state Tarachand Bhagora.
