BANGALORE:  The torrential rains that have been lashing the western and south interior Karnataka for the last two days have disrupted normal life in many districts of the state.
While two people - one in Haveri and another in Madikeri - died due to a wall collapse on Sunday, splash floods and landslides have affected the road and rail traffic in many parts of the state. Several villages on the banks of Aghanashini river in Uttar Kannada were inundated. Udupi, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Chikmagalur, Madikeri and Shimoga are the worst hit districts.

According to the Bangalore Meteorological Centre, heavy rains coupled with speedy wind is likely to lash the coastal and Ghat areas of south interior districts for the next 48 hours.

While Agumbe received a record rain fall of 34 cm, Kottigehara in Chikmagalur district recorded 32 cm of rains. Siddapur and Kollur in Udupi have received 26 and 25 cm respectively.

Vehicular traffic on National Highway63 had come to a standstill between Yellapur and Ankola on most part of Sunday following a landslide on the Arabail Ghat section. The same highway was blocked at Sunksal village with Gangavali river overflowing.

In a similar incident, the rail traffic on the BangaloreMangalore line was also affected as a rail engine got derailed due to a landslide near Sakleshpur.
