CHENNAI: Universities in the State have been directed by the Madras High Court to publish within a week, academic rankings of all affiliated self-financing colleges under their jurisdiction. A direction to this effect was issued by Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, while disposing of a writ petition from N Ramprasanth of Manachanallur village in Tiruchy district, on Monday. The grievance of the petitioner, who was seeking admission in an engineering college, claimed that, in the absence of a list of rankings of self-financing colleges, particularly on their academic performance, he and other students were unable to decide on which college to choose. The judge said universities were bound to disclose academic rankings of affiliated colleges, in the interest of students, particularly when the number of engineering colleges in the State was more than 500. The petitioner was then permitted to make a representation before the concerned Controller of Examinations and Registrar of the respective universities within two days. The judge also directed appropriate authorities to publish the requested rankings and inform the same to the petitioner and make it public within a week.
