Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday said that he is ready for a Central Bureau Investigation probe in Puttingal temple fire tragedy in Kollam district. The Chief Minister said that his government will inform the Kerala High Court of its stand on Thursday.
The court had suggested a CBI probe into the tragedy.
Chandy has also said that the Centre should declare the tragedy a 'national calamity'. AT least 113 people have lost their lives and over 300 people are injured in the incident.
During a Cabinet meeting, the government also decided to help the two children who have been orphaned by the tragedy. "The government will be paying for their education. We will help them in construction of their house and waive loan taken by their parents."
On the guidelines for the fireworks display, Chandy said, "We cannot take a unilateral decision as election code of conduct is in place. We will inform the high court about the government's decision."
Making her stand clear, Kollam District Collector Shainamol said, "I have given a report to the Chief Secretary narrating the facts. It is just a factual report. That the District Collector is supposed to give when such an incident happens."
The fire tragedy at the 100-year-old temple had occurred during an unauthorised display of fireworks early Sunday morning after a spark from a firecracker fell on the storehouse containing crackers, triggering explosions.
