Bengaluru: A 32-year-old researcher died during a hydrogen cylinder blast in their laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on Wednesday afternoon. Three others, who were seriously injured in the explosion, were rushed to MS Ramaiah Memorial hospital.
According to IISc authorities, a cylinder exploded in the Aerospace Department’s Laboratory for Hypersonic and Shockwave at around 2.10pm. Four people from Superwave Technologies, a start-up being incubated at IISc, were at the laboratory when the incident occurred.
The explosion, devoid of fire and gas, threw Manoj Kumar, an M-Tech graduate working for the start-up, against the wall and he died on the spot. Three others — Atulya Uday Kumar, Kartik Shenoy and Naresh Kumar — were severely injured and rushed to hospital.
IISc authorities who inspected the spot said they were uncertain about the reason behind the explosion. “There is no sign of gas or fire. But the force released was enough to kill a person on the spot. We had placed all safety measures inside the premises,” said the official.
The start-up, Super-Wave Technology Private Limited (SWTPL), is an IISc initiative, which is promoted and managed by KPJ Reddy and G Jagadeesh — both professors of Department of Aerospace Engineering. They specialise in shock wave-related technologies.
As per the sources, Manoj Kumar was residing in Manyata Tech Park with his wife. He was associated with IISc since last two years as research scientist.
Researcher Manoj Kumar was killed on the spot after the explosion.
Additional Commissioner of Police BK Singh and DCP Central D Devaraj has visited the spot. A case has been registered in Sadashivanagar police station.
