CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday ordered immediate renovation of Integrated Women Sanitary Complexes throughout Tamil Nadu. The facilities, intended for use by women in rural areas, should be put into use in three months, the Chief Minister has ordered. An official release here said the Jayalalithaa-headed government had been implementing several pioneering schemes to better women’s health and sanitation.During the previous AIADMK regime, integrated sanitary complexes were built for use by women in rural regions. By 2004, the sanitary complexes with facilities including toilets, bathrooms and washing areas were set up at all the 12,618 village panchayats.Chief Minister Jayalalithaa came to know that such women complexes had not been utilised adequately in the past five years due to water shortage and absence of electricity. “The chief minister has ordered a revamp of the facilities throughout the State. She has also asked officials to create awareness among the people on the importance of using the facilities.”  Voluntary organisations would be encouraged to sensitise people on the need to shun unhealthy practices like open-air defecation, the release added.
