CHENNAI: While the entire city is cribbing about auto drivers fleecing the public, three auto drivers were rewarded for their good behaviour as part of the ‘Mr Auto’ campaign. An SMS-cum-radio voting contest conducted by Chennai Live 104.8 FM and Chennai City Traffic Police (CCTP), deemed these three drivers honest, fair and courteous and honoured them with cash prizes.The campaign was started to make Chennai a safer place, beginning with rewarding the auto drivers. Sanjay Arora, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), distributed the prizes. Viswanathan, who received 456 ‘good’ votes, bagged the first prize of Rs 25,000.  The second prize was awarded to Pradeep with 240 votes and the third prize to Albert Abraham with 172 good votes. Pradeep and Abraham received a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 each.An auto driver with a post graduate degree in public administration, Viswanathan said he was very proud of his achievement and would always be honest in his fares. Arora lauded the campaign and congratulated the winners. “Auto drivers also help society when it comes to traffic accidents. None recognises their efforts,” he said.Prem Kumar, chief operations officer of Chennai Live 104.8 FM, said that the campaign covered 20,000 autos and received 10,000 SMS of which 7,000 were genuine. A majority of the text messages received also rated the auto ride good.  “We are also planning to try this out on buses,” said Prem Kumar, adding that the man behind the idea was Sanjay Arora.
