Patna:The Patna High Court on Monday rejected an appeal for mercy killing by jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammad Shahabuddin.
The court has ordered his immediate treatment at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a serious spinal problem.
Rejecting his plea, the court asked the Bihar government to shift him to the AIIMS.
Shahabuddin, who has been suffering from spinal problems for the last few months, had filed the mercy killing petition as pain in his spine had become unbearable and the state government was apathetic to sending him outside the state for better treatment.
Senior lawyer VV Giri, representing the MP's case, said the court had also directed the AIIMS director to submit a report on Shahabuddin's condition after two weeks of treatment.
Last week a special medical committee examined Shahabuddin in Siwan prison after he complained of spinal problems.
The committee recommended that he should be taken to a specialised spinal treatment centre outside the state.
Shahabuddin, who has been charged in over 40 criminal cases, including murder, abduction and possession of illegal arms, underwent medical check-up twice after he filed a petition last month seeking specialised treatment.
Earlier this month, the court had ordered re-examination of his medical condition after a panel of three neurosurgeons refused to see him.
RJD had repeatedly alleged that the state government is deliberately denying treatment to Shahabuddin.
