THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oomen Chandy on Wednesday inaugurated the 28-km road connecting Akkulam-Sreekaryam-Mannanthala-Kizhakkemukkola-Vazhayila-Vattiyoorkavu-Kundamankadavu. The road was constructed using the fund of Central Road Fund at a cost of Rs 26.54 crore. The NH wing of State PWD executed the road works. PWD Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju presided over the function. The road was constructed on the standard set by Indian Roads Congress and Ministry of Road Transports and Highways, the officials said. Apart from resurfacing using BMDC, drainage was constructed at areas where waterlogging is an issue. Retaining walls and sidewalls were constructed at required areas.  In addition to the Akkulam-Kundamankadavu road, a road connecting Kizhakkemukkola and Peroorkada too was constructed as part of the project.  According to officials, proper road safety measures have been taken in the newly- constructed road. Also, the department has invited suggestions from Traffic AC (North) for better safety measures. Palode Ravi MLA, during the inauguration ceremony, requested the BSNL and KWA officials not to dig the road for utility services for the next five years so that the roads will be in a better condition.
