Robert Downey Jr on reinventing Sherlock Holmes
The actor plays London's most famous detective in Guy Ritchie's next.

New Delhi: Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr may have his hands full with filming for Iron Man-2, but he made time from the superhero movie just to play iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes.

"That's part of the thing that was so attractive to me about doing Sherlock Holmes after Iron Man. It was such kind of a radical departure. A period piece. A very, very established kind of iconic image comes to mind when you think of Sherlock Holmes, whereas Iron Man was a relatively unknown quote-unquote second tier superhero until last year," he said.

The actor reveals that extensive research went into reinventing Holmes as someone more than a violin-playing, pipe-smoking intellectual who was wary of getting his hands dirty.

"He is a weirdo by any standards. Yet he is an expert by any metric. He has dedicated the entirety of his adult life to this one purpose, which is being a consulting detective and knowing things that other people don't take the time to make it their business to know," says the actor.

Sherlock Holmes focuses on detective Holmes and his partner Watson, played by Jude Law, who engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England. This Guy Ritchie film is slated for a December release.
