Beijing: Romanian Alina Alexandra Dumitru claimed the women's judo 48kg gold medal at the Beijing Olympics on Saturday.

The European champion dominated the final against Cuba's Yanet Bermoy, throwing her for waza-ari (half point) with a leg-grab before finishing her off with a textbook osoto-gari (major outer sweep) for the maximum ippon score.

Double Olympic champion Ryoko Tani of Japan, whom Dumitru beat in the semi-finals, claimed a record fifth Olympic medal by taking bronze as she beat Russia's Liudmila Bogdanova.

Argentina's Paula Paretto was a surprise medalist, winning the other bronze by beating North Korea's Pak Ok Song.

In the men's -60kg division Choi Min-Ho of South Korea won the gold medal.

The 2003 world champion, a bronze medalist in Athens, was in startling form throughout the day and defeated Austria's Ludwig Paischer with a brilliant te-guruma (leg-grab pick-up) for the maximum ippon in the final.

Current world champion Rouben Houkes of the Netherlands beat Israel's Gal Yekutiel for bronze while the second bronze medal went to Rishod Sobirov of Uzbekistan, beating France's Dimitri Dragin.
