Shortly before his execution, Saddam Hussein said a farewell to his American guards and personal physician.

Kuwait: Shortly before his execution, Iraqi ex-president Saddam Hussein said a farewell to his American guards, a personal physician and an Iraqi translator, Multi-National Force-Iraq spokesman General William Caldwell has said.

He said on Wednesday that Saddam was hanged a few hours after he was turned over to Iraqi authorities.

Before his death, the Iraqi ex-president talked with American soldiers who guarded him and thanked them for good treatment during his stay in prison. Saddam's farewell to his doctor and translator was especially warm, Caldwell said.

He added that the Americans did not interfere in anything. Iraqis handled the execution, including checking those who attended it for having mobile telephones. After the execution, the body of Hussein was turned over to representatives of US troops for taking it to his home village near Tikrit.

Caldwell said that the US Army lost 800 servicemen in Iraq in 2006. Over 3,000 American soldiers were killed in Iraq since March 2003.
