Sambhaji Brigade seeks OBC status for Marathas
The demands included setting up of an international-level memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea.

Nashik: The two-day long Sixth National Convention of the Sambhaji Brigade held in Nashik has demanded the inclusion of the Maratha community in the other backward class (OBC) category. "The Maratha community is being kept away from reservations, but we will continue our efforts to get it," Maharashtra's Agriculture Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said on the concluding day of the convention on Sunday.

Six important resolutions were passed during the convention. The demands included setting up of an international-level memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea, give the status of an international tourism centre to Raigad fort and reconstruction of Maharashtra's forts.

They also demanded that free education be given to children of the Maratha community from the first standard to twelfth standard, as well as opposition to the 2015-16 Kumbh Mela to be held in Trimbakeshwar on the grounds of "blind faith".

Sambhaji Brigade's state president Praveen Gaikwad, Member of Legislative Assembly Jayant Jadhav and the organisation's state unit general secretary Manoj Akhare were present on the dais, besides Congress MLA from Sinnar, Manikkrao Kokate, state minister Balasaheb Thorat and founder of Shiva Dharma organisation Purushottam Khedekar.
