Sania enters Wimbledon singles second round
Indian No. 1 wins the first round match against Anna-Lena Groenfield.

Wimbledon Sania Mirza has got her Wimbledon womens' singles campaign off to the perfect start winning her first round match against Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

The Indian No. 1 won the three-set encounter against Groenefeld 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Sania's win means that the 78th ranked player has now a 3-0 lead over Groenefeld.

Sania started superbly and took the first set 6-2 in just over 30 minutes.

But the 52nd ranked German fought back and even though Sania earned three breakpoints in the first game by hitting some good winners but Groenefeld hung on.

Groenefeld broke Sania in the next game, using drop shots and went on to take a 3-0 lead. Sania raised her game and broke back Groenefeld but only to drop her own serve in the sixth game to squander the opportunity to draw parity.

The Indian then saved two set points in the eighth game but unforced errors dented her chances and she eventually lost the set 2-6 in 44 minutes.

Sania kept her composure and put her best foot forward in the final set to take it 6-2 in 36 minutes and move into the next round.

Sania's opponent in the second round is 28th ranked Romanian Sorana Cirstea, who made waves at the French Open recently by making it to the quarter-finals.

Cirstea defeated another Romanian, Edina Gallovits, in straight sets 7-5, 6,1 to advance to the second round.
