SC waives off Rs 50,000 fine on Zaheera
SC has waived off the Rs 50,000 fine imposed upon key witness in the Best Bakery case, Zaheera Sheikh.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has waived off the Rs 50,000 fine imposed upon key witness in the Best Bakery case, Zaheera Sheikh, and sentenced her to one-year imprisonment for contempt of court.

A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat passed the order to this effect after Zaheera's counsel said that she had already undergone the one-year jail term awarded to her on March 8, 2006.

Earlier, she had moved the apex court seeking review of the verdict imposing the fine after she was sentenced to one year's rigorous imprisonment for her flip-flop.

The court had asked Zaheera's counsel to divulge the names of politicians who had allegedly exploited her after the Gujarat riots of 2002.

Zaheera had turned hostile during the trial of the case and was severely reprimanded for her "flip flops".

Seeking waiving off the fine, Zaheera had submitted that she could not afford to pay the fine imposed on her.

The apex court, in its March 8 verdict, had said that if she did not pay the fine, she would undergo a further term of one-year imprisonment.

It had punished Zaheera after a report of the high-powered inquiry committee appointed by it had indicted her as a "self-condemned liar".

Disapproving the conduct of Zaheera in the case, the court had directed the Income Tax authorities to attach her assets and bank accounts for three months.
