New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party is taking on the Delhi Police yet again and are holding a protest at Jantar Mantar over the illegal sex trade in the state. The move comes after three Ugandan women said that they were forced into illegal sex trafficking in Delhi's Khirkhi extension. AAP is holding protests to demand safety for the Ugandan women.
The party said that the Delhi Police cannot be be entrusted with the safety of the Ugandan women. The Delhi government had earlier written to the Ministry of External Affairs asking that the Ugandan women be given protection and arrangements be made for their return to Uganda.
The MEA, the DCW and the Delhi Police have swung into action after 3 Ugandan women gave powerful testimonies alleging that they were forced into an illegal sex racket in the capital's Khirki extension area.
"We have immediately written to the Ugandan High Commission and suggested that they provide consular access to the Ugandan women and they have said they will do so as early as possible. We have communicated this to the Delhi government," MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.
A month ago, the AAP faced criticism over Law Minister Somnath Bharti's showdown with the Delhi Police at Khirki following which Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had held a protest demanding suspension of the police officers for not following Bharti's orders.
But after the complaint of the 3 Ugandan women now, the Delhi police has registered an FIR against unknown people under the Immoral Trafficking Act.
The Delhi Commission for women has also taken note of the issue. "There should be proper investigation into this," Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Singh said.
The three women who spoke to CNN-IBN have been shifted out of Khirki extension by the Delhi government to an undisclosed location for their safety.
