New Delhi: Okay, we might not have looked at Indian beasts and creatures with too much approval in the past, but this is different. Like, totally different. If you (like us) have been thinking that Indian films should leave the supernatural/special effects-heavy stuff to Hollywood, you are wrong.
When we heard that Tamil filmmaker Shankar was making a new film, we fully expected it to be larger-than-life, with a funky storyline and starring popular actors. But what we didn't expect was that feeling of thrill and intrigue.
The one minute teaser for the film opens with a hairy beast, with surprisingly intelligent eyes peeking from behind a bush. But before we elaborate, you must understand that we aren't talking about a CGI-generated monster, or a random person wearing a mask and some blotchy make-up. This one looks real, too real, and that's the scary part.
Throughout the sequences shown in the trailer, we can see that there are two different avatars of the beast. Whether or not they are the same creatures, remains to be seen. Actor Vikram sports two different looks in the film -- one, where he sports his magnificent toned body, longish hair and a handlebar moustache, and the other with short hair, clean-shaven face and fancier clothes.
The beast, too, has two avatars. One, with more ape-like characteristics, and the other with a hunched back, and a horribly disfigured face.
The second one reminded us strongly of Quasimodo, from 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame'. In one scene, he is even seen carrying a bridal-looking Amy Jackson on his back and tying her up in a dark room.
"What do you want? Who are you," she can be heard screaming, as the trailer draws to an end.
We have a sneaking suspicion that these two avatars belong to two different times, but we could be wrong.
Whatever the timeline, Vikram and Shankar have us hooked with the teaser.
Along with Vikram and Jackson 'I' also stars Suresh Gopi, Upen Patel and Santhanam in key roles. This film is produced by Aascar Ravinchandran. The film is slated for a release this October.
