THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Government Chief Whip PC George said that the State Government should show some guts in going ahead with the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar.Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, George said that the state lacked a Central Government nod, when it set out to construct Banasura Sagar dam across Kabani, which was also an inter-state river in Wayanad 30 years ago. The guts shown by the then Chief Minister K Karunakaran needed to be emulated by the present dispensation. The state has obtained all sanctions necessary for the commencement of construction except that of Environmental Ministry now. But the ministry should understand that no major environmental problems would arise owing to the new dam as it would be constructed within a small area of just 26 hectares. The new dam will remain only as a support dam, which only needed to be made operational after the collapse of Mullaperiyar dam. Until then, Tamil Nadu can draw water from the existing dam. The complete control of the new dam would be with Tamil Nadu. But someone should to convince the Tamil Nadu Government and people about this.Defence Minister A K Antony is the best man to take up the task as he has a clean image among the people of Tamil Nadu. The intervention of any other leader, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, could be politicised, George said.He also said that he accepted with great grief the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s stance on the imbroglio created by the Advocate-General, which the latter termed as a closed chapter and lauded Minister P J Joseph, who raised his voice so that everyone became aware of the urgency involved in the Mullaperiyar issue.
