NAGERCOIL: A Sub-Inspector attached to the Tirunelveli District Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was injured while defusing a bomb at Muttom in the district on Friday. A total of 64 country made bombs were recovered from boats in the sea off Muttom coast, after two crude bombs kept in a stranded canoe exploded on Thursday morning. There had been enmity between two groups in connection with the Muttom All Saints’ Church parish council election in the hamlet and last year, during the Christmas season, clashes ensued between both the groups. After several rounds of peace talks made by the police, the clashes ended. Meanwhile, to prevent any untoward incidents during the Easter festival, police have strengthened vigil in Muttom during the past days, but on Thursday, two country made bombs kept in a stranded canoe anchored near the new harbour construction site at Muttom exploded. Following this, police led by Tirunelveli Range DIG V Varadharaju, SP Pravesh Kumar and other senior officials, conducted a search inside the other boats anchored near the canoe involved in the incident on Thursday night. During the check, the police found 64 country-made bombs kept in 5 boats in the area. Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad personnel from Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli were brought to the spot and while defusing the devices on Thursday night, a bomb exploded, injuring a sub-inspector Murugesan (54) of the Tirunelveli BDDS squad. The injured SI was immediately taken to a private hospital in Nagercoil for treatment and now the condition of the SI is stable, said police sources.Following the seizure of the country-made bombs, tension mounted in Muttom and additional police security have been posted in the hamlet. Vellichanthai police have filed 3 cases, including two cases under the Explosives Act, and are investigating.
