CUTTACK: The heat over the alleged gangrape of a college girl at Baliapal is on the police with the Orissa High Court issuing orders for immediate arrest of the accused persons. Earlier, the division bench of Chief Justice V Gopalagowda and Justice BN Mohapatra had directed SP Balasore to personally supervise the investigation into the case. Accordingly, the SP on Thursday filed the status report and stated before the court that the investigation has been entrusted to an officer of DSP-rank and he himself is monitoring the progress. Government Advocate R. K. Mohapatra submitted that as per the direction of the court adequate security has been provided at SCBMCH for protection of the victim and treatment cost is borne by the Government. A PIL has been filed by an advocate of the court Ashish Chandra Rath appealing for directions to the authorities to take action against the erring police officials and pay ` 10 lakh compensation to the victim. He has also sought a Crime Branch probe into the case. The petitioner alleged that on October 13, while the victim was waiting at a bus stop of Dahamunda in Balasore district, her neighbour and family acquaintance Bapuni Das came in a motor cycle and offered to drop her at the college. While the victim was going with him, three others joined on the way. They took her to some other place and gangraped her by confining her to a room at Baliapal for two days. The victim was then allegedly dumped near a pond from where she was rescued by locals and taken to the hospital. It is further alleged that when the family members of the victim went to lodge the FIR, the police refused to accept it and only after the incident was made public by the media, the police registered the case. Presently, with the help of an NGO, the victim is under treatment at SCB and her family members are allegedly being threatened by the perpetrators of the crime who have influential connections, the petitioner alleged.
