Student shot dead in Meerut

New Delhi: A PhD student was shot dead by unidentified men in Meerut's Chaudhary Charan Singh University on Tuesday.

Police say Sandeep Gujjar was standing outside a hostel on the campus when two men fired at him and fled on a motorcycle.

Police have launched a hunt for the attackers.

The incident sparked a protest from the students. They staged a dharna and even resorted to violence in different parts of the city.

A police team resorted to fire to control the mob and at one spot one policeman was seriously injured in clashes with the students.

A police team had gone to raid the house of the prime accused, Neeraj Mallick, in the murder when some men opened fire.

Father of the accused was shot dead in the shootout.
