THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET), one of the most reputed educational institutions in the State, has been in the news for the past few years for all wrong reasons; most of them pertaining to the frequent outbreaks of violence among the students which marred the peaceful atmosphere on the campus. Once again, after a slumber of about a year, violence hit the college on Monday. As many as six students were injured in a clash that erupted in the college between two groups of student political outfits, in which both sides recorded casualties. The injured students were identified as Naseeb, 21, Sumin, 20, Renjith, 21, Shibily, 21, Akhilesh, 20, and Vineeth, 20, all of them students of the college. Among them, Naseeb and Renjith have suffered serious stab injuries. According to sources, the fight broke out while the members of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) unit in the college were taking out a protest march on the campus. No other students were present in the college since the KSU activists had called for an education strike in protest against an alleged attack on one of its members by Students Federation of India (SFI) activists in the college the other day. The agitating KSU supporters were confronted by SFI activists, following which the two groups engaged in a major fight. The students even used weapons like daggers to attack one another. A tense situation has been prevailing in the college for the past few weeks after KSU, the student outfit of the Congress party, started its unit in the institution, which was a bastion of the left-aligned SFI for several years. The college authorities have suspended classes in the college on Tuesday and Wednesday following the untoward incidents that occurred on Monday. The Sreekariyam police have also registered a case.
