Mumbai: Such is the buzz that's building up around her performance in Mira Nair's The Namesake that Hollywood's prestigious Premiere magazine has devoted a two-page spread to Tabu, declaring her a talent to look out for.
"The star of The Namesake is one of Bollywood's biggest celebrities. Don't recognise her? You will soon", the magazine says in its March issue that features a full-page portrait of the actress alongside a profile.
"She's thought of as a mix between Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett," says Mira Nair about her leading lady, for whom The Namesake is her first brush with international attention.
“I am curious, not excited, tensed or worried because I had nothing to lose. It could go anywhere. And the fact that I was not expecting anything from it puts me in a more comfortable space and view the result from an objective viewpoint,” says Tabu of The Namesake.
The movie which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year, will be released in the US on March 9 by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
Adapted from Jhumpa Lahiri's novel by the same name, about an immigrant Bengali family that moves to New York from Kolkata, the film also features Irrfan Khan and American-Indian actor Kal Penn.
Thanks to Mira Nair's high profile in the West, The Namesake is expected to generate much excitement when it opens shortly.
In India, the film is slated for release on March 23, and local distributors are hoping that strong international buzz will keep the film in the news when it arrives on local shores.
