CHENNAI: A group of Youth Congressmen from Karaikudi on Sunday launched a hunger strike here at the Satyamurthi Bhavan over the forthcoming local polls. The Congress has not declared its official nominee for the post of chairman in Karaikudi. Also nominees for the posts of councillors (in 27 wards) have not been announced.Since the last day of filing nominations is already over (Sep 29), they wanted the party to recognise and give authorisation papers (Forms A, B) to party workers who had already filed nominations in anticipation of the official ticket. This would enable them to become official party candidates and get symbols. Monday is the last day to file papers.YC general secretary for Sivaganga, V Charles John Kennedy, said over 400 workers submitted forms seeking tickets for 36 wards. Four of them competed for the ticket to the chairman’s post. But, only nine have been named party candidates in nine wards. “Though many wanted to contest, none was nominated. Isn’t it shocking?” he asked. He alleged that certain functionaries with the ‘blessings’ of a Union minister’s aides had ensured a ‘tacit understanding’ with the DMK, to support DMK men.M Kalidasan, a YC functionary, wanted the party to field cadre rather than being “hand in glove with a discredited party”. By 10.30 pm, TNCC president K V Thangkabalu arrived at the office - the fast venue - and tried in vain to pacify the agitators.
