And Mohammad Ali , as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in his time was a powerful symbol not just for sport, but for the struggle of the African American community against abuse and bias no wonder, Obama is being cast in the shadow of the great Mohammad Ali.
The Williams sisters are also path-breakers, having fought of cynicism to emerge as tennis champions their religious beliefs stopped them from voting for Obama but both Venus and Serena are excited by their new president.
“It is one of the greatest moments for the country. To have Martin Luther King’s birthday and Obama’s presidency so close is very special,” says Serena Williams.
“He was definitely the best candidate,” says Venus Williams.
Obama is no mean sportsman himself and has promised to put in a court in the White House the strong symbolism of that will be hard to ignore.
