HYDERABAD: Puddles which turn the most ungainly strides into nimble foot-work and the sullen weather make monsoons look worse than they really are. The rains revive nostalgia and provide the best excuse to stay indoors. It provides the perfect excuse to stir up some tasty snacks, never mind the calories, or to curl up with your favorite book or movie.“Monsoons are an excuse to snack on piping hot bhutta and a visit to the nearest movie hall to catch any Tollywood movie. I just saw ‘180’ with my family last Friday, perfect way to celebrate the rains,” says T. Sharada, a homemaker. Talking of food, many Hyderabadis swear by the Irani-chai elixir for any weather. “Catching a cup of hot Irani-chai and tie-biscuits was all the excuse me and my group of friends needed for bunking classes in college,” says a nostalgic S. Adithya. When it comes to movies, choices range from scary to mushy, depending on the company one is watching it with. For Ruchi Soni, an MNC employee, “Best way to laze around on a rainy day is snacking on piping hot alu-pakoda and watching a scary movie like Jurassic Park with my younger sister or to rediscover the novel English August.” There are others who can’t think of life beyond the iPod. “Jackie Johnson and a cup of filter coffee after reaching home make the bad driving experience seem worthwhile during the rains,” says Rashida Burhani. Classic movies seem to be a favourite for reliving memories on the cold and dark evenings. Tilottama Bose, an art critic says, “I look forward to catching up on my black and white movie collection on those rare weekends I get to spend at home with the best excuse. It is usually Casablanca for the die-hard romantic in me and while at it, a cup of hot-chocolate completes the rejuvenating experience.” As the verdict goes, good food and a warm home make up the best refuge on a chilly rainy day. The only better bet could be pulling off a Gene Kelly by Singing in the rain.
