KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has opined that traffic islands in the middle of road junctions are not ideal locations for installing statues. “Statues erected in traffic islands are causing problems to commuters. Traffic islands in the middle of the National Highway are not ideal for installing statues,” the HC held on Tuesday. The court also observed that hoardings erected on the roadsides are dangerous and divert the attention of drivers. A Division Bench of the High Court made the observation while considering a petition filed by Sivankutty of Neyyattinkara challenging the installation of a statue of Sundaran Nadar at Neyyattinkara traffic island, which is in the middle of the National Highway (NH). The petitioner submitted that erecting a statue on the NH was against the rules and regulations. “Statues in traffic islands in the middle of the city are likely to divert the attention of drivers, which may cause accidents,” the Bench observed, staying the installation of the statue.
