Truce ends, ANF to resume combing operations today

After a week-long truce, Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) will resume its combing operations in Sakleshpur and Beltangady naxal affected areas from Wednesday.

A group of Maoists who were found near Kaginahare forest in Sakleshpur taluk, had wanted to surrender after the ANF intensified operations a week ago. But they decided to continue their movement two days after Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar ordered a ceasefire from September 17.

ANF IGP Alok Kumar on Tuesday told Express: “The ANF has decided to resume the operations from Wednesday. The decision was taken in a high power committee meeting held in Bangalore on Monday. It does not mean that the ANF has decided to kill naxals in encounters. The government is making sincere efforts to bring naxals to the mainstream.”

Meanwhile, Hassan SP Amit Singh said, the police are yet to receive any communication from the Maiosts but we are on high alert. The villagers have been directed to cooperate with the ANF during the combing operation, he added.

Caught in forest

On August 30, a team of naxals strayed into the forests in Subrahmanya for the first time to take away provisions from a home at Palligadde near Kulkunda in Subrahmanya. As news of the presence of naxals spread like a wild fire, ANF intensified its combing operation. On September 4, Ellappa alias Dinakar was shot during an exchange of fire between naxalites and ANF team. The combing operation continued until September 16.

Sources said that the naxals had wished to surrender as they could not escape due to geographical confusion. They were trapped in the forest which is covered by three rivers, including Kumaradhara, one of the deepest and fastest flowing rivers of the Western Ghats.
