THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a shocking incident which revealed the fragile security existing in prisons, three inmates of the special sub-jail near Poojapura managed to escape on Sunday evening. Two of them were however immediately apprehended by the prison staff. One of the prisoners is still at large. Shaji, 24,of Kannumangudi near Kerala-Tamil Nadu border was the one who escaped. Viswa Raj,22, of Ochira, and Kunjumon,23, were the two who were captured. According to Prison DIG H Gopakumar, three inmates, accused in several criminal cases, managed to climb over 20 feet high wall using an iron pipe that was kept for construction works. One of the inmate Kunjumon suffered a fracture on his lower limb as he tried to climb down the wall. He was immediately spotted by a prison staff who was returning home after duty. Viswa Raj was held from the bathroom of a nearby house. The search for Shaji is on. Shaji is an accused in two cases of abduction of minor girls. Viswa Raj, who was arrested for raping and murdering a woman near Kayamkulam in 2011, was recently shifted here from Poojapura Central Prison. Kunjumon is said to be a history-sheeter involved in a couple of theft cases.
