According to reports, US officials had expressed deep unease over security during the 2012 London Olympics.

London: Amid security concerns during the the 2012 London Olympics, Britain may deploy ground-to-air missiles to protect the mega sporting event.

Defence secretary Philip Hammond told the House of Commons on Monday that ground-to-air missiles will be deployed to protect the Olympic Games in London if deemed operationally necessary.

His announcement comes in the wake of reports that the United States had raised repeated concerns about security at the London Olympics and that it was preparing to send nearly 1,000 agents, including 500 from the FBI, to protect its contestants and diplomats.

He said this in response to a question by the former Defence secretary, Liam Fox.

According to The Guardian, US officials had expressed deep unease over security during the Olympics, while UK officials are said to be exasperated about US meddling, as well as the size of the US "footprint" in the UK during the games next year.

The friction is reportedly adding to the pressures on the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog), which is responsible for preparing and staging the event.
