Ulhasnagar residents' plea bulldozed
Overruling the residents' plea, the Bombay High Court said there is no question of stopping the demolition drive.

Mumbai: The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) can now continue with its demolition drive.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday, overruled a plea by the residents, seeking a stop to the demolition of illegal structures in the area.

The court said there is no question of stopping the demolition drive. It also asked the police to provide adequate security to municipal workers.

The court has asked the municipality to ensure that no legal structures are harmed.

On December 5, the UMC had passed a revised set of Development Control Rules (DCR) giving hope to the suburb.

The revised DCR?which had to be approved by the state Urban Development Department?proposed regularising the illegal buildings and levying a fine.

The penalty was supposed to be the depreciated value of the cost of construction at that point of time, of which the occupier would have paid 50 per cent and the rest would be split between the builder, owner and the architect.

But now it seems the court order has sealed the fate of the one lakh residents living in 855 illegal buildings in Ulhasnagar.

On November 30, Ulhasnagar area was in a curfew-like-situation after residents pelted stones at civic officers and went on a dharna when the UMC had begun its demolition drive.

What's your reaction?
