New Delhi: United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki Moon called up Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday in connection with the Mumbai attacks.

While details of the conversation are not available, the UN chief's call to Zardari comes in the wake of increasing international pressure on the Pakistan government to act against those behind the terror strikes on Mumbai.

India has maintained that elements in Pakistan were behind the attacks.

The UN secretary-general had spoken to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh two days ago and condemned the attacks.

Condemning the terror attack in Mumbai, the Secretary General expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of those killed and wounded in the three-day-long attacks.

During the telephonic talk, Ban and Singh agreed that it was critical to bring the perpetrators of the carnage to justice and that all should fully cooperate in this effort, the UN Information Centre said here.

Ban Ki Moon also discussed Pakistan's request to the UN to set up an inquiry commission into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto with Zardari.
