Hardwar: Indian Army has begun rescue operations in Joshimath, Uttarakhand and is helping hundreds of pilgrims to get to safety. Over 600 pilgrims are currently stranded in Joshimath's relief camps after the monsoon wreaked havoc in the state.
To control the situation, the Army has constructed makeshift bridges and is using ropes and ladders to create paths for the stranded pilgrims to trek down from the mountains. Pilgrims are also being assisted by Army personnel as they move down the hillside.
Around 70,000 people are stranded in different parts of Uttarakhand after monsoon hit early in North India. Three battalions of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are working in Uttarakhand and around a 1000 ITBP officers have been deployed in the northern state.
Slow moving traffic has also started towards Rishikesh, said Ajay Chadha, DG, ITBP said. "ITBP is trying to construct temporary bridges with the help of Border Roads Organisation (BRO). We are trying to reach those who are stranded through temporary bridges at Govindghat," he added.
